Never Install VirtualBox on Server Hardware
While I a fan of VirtualBox, it should never be installed on server hardware and ran in a production environment.
I have found that VirtualBox is best installed on beefy computer desktops or laptops and only for the purposes of testing or developing only.
The reasons are simple:
- VirtualBox is not a bare-bones hypervisor
- Multi-User security is missing
- Third-party Web-based management
- Confusing Open-source and Proprietary Oracle release
VirtualBox is not a bare-bones hypervisor
This severely reduces performance and wastes unnecessary resources that could be better utilized for virtual guests.
Multi-User Security is Missing
Multi-tenancy and management is impossible by multiple people. The system is designed to be managed by a single user.
Third-party Web-based Management
I use phpVirtualBox but unfortunately it lags behind of official VirtualBox releases.
Confusing Open-source and Proprietary Oracle Release
Which one to download? It should either be entirely open source with source code made available. Not different versions of the same product.
